Science Communication Workshop with Judy Muller and George Lewis
07/27/2019 - 07/27/2019
Meeting Description:

Many scientists, from post-docs to Nobel prize winners, struggle when it comes to succinctly explaining their work to a lay audience, whether that audience is a reporter, a donor, other scientists, or just relatives and friends. This one-day workshop will teach you how to distill your message with clarity and passion and how to connect with the specific audience you are trying to reach. Judy Muller and George Lewis, our instructors, bring a lifetime of experience in the art of communicating difficult material in accessible ways. They both are former network correspondents (Muller from CBS and ABC, Lewis from NBC) who have reported on science and technology throughout their careers. Muller has worked as an instructor for the Alda Center for Communicating Science, which uses both improv techniques and narrative speaking skills to help scientists communicate with a lay audience. Lewis was the leading technology and innovation correspondent for NBC in the last years of his 42-year career with that network.

Notes:

The one-day workshop will conclude with practice interviews on camera, with immediate feedback from these two Emmy and Peabody award-winning journalists.

We wish to ensure an intimate workshop setting, with no more than 20 to 25 participants. If you are interested in attending, but have not received an invitation, please contact the workshop organizer before registering. If you have registered for a meeting you were not invited to, you may be subject to a $100 fee.

TSRC is about expanding the frontiers of science, exploring new ideas, and building collaborations. The workshop schedule will allow for substantial unstructured time for participants to talk and think. All participants are expected to stay for the entire duration of the workshop. Scientists are encouraged to consider bringing family or friends. Telluride offers a number of options for children's camps (including Telluride Academy, Aha School for the Arts, and Pinhead Institute). There is more information on childcare, camps, and family activities on TSRC's website. Feel free to contact TSRC's staff to help with any planning and/or coordinating care.
