Workshop Details
Bridging the Two Cultures: Nanoparticles and Clusters, A TSRC Collaborative
06/28/2010 - 07/02/2010
Meeting Description:

Goal: To identify major problems common to the studies of small nanoscale particles and of atomic and molecular clusters. This will include problems of geometric and electronic structure, such as how and why the electronic and bonding properties and even the stable geometric structures of small systems sometimes differ markedly from their bulk counterparts. It will also address problems of kinetics and dynamics, of how such particles relax and find stable structures, and of how they might be controlled. The program plan will have participants providing one or two relevant publications or preprints that will be circulated prior to the workshop. The participants will also be asked to submit their favorite "big" unsolved problems in this field. From their submissions. a master list will be prepared by the organizers that will be the basis for the discussions in the meetings. Participants will not be asked to prepare formal talks on past work. However several will be asked to be discussion leaders or panel members in sessions devoted to particular open issues. The goal of the workshop will be to initiate productive new ways to attack some of those major outstanding
problems.
