Self-assembly and organization in non-equilibrium systems
06/20/2023 - 06/24/2023
Meeting Description:

One of the important and current challenges in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and
thermodynamics is to uncover the underpinnings of organization occurring in highly non-equilibrium
conditions. Such enquiry is crucial in many biophysical, material sciences, and chemical physics
contexts. This proposed workshop intends to bring together researchers studying self-assembly and
organization in highly dynamic non-equilibrium conditions.

We anticipate that this workshop will be of interest to researchers studying organization in active matter systems, systems driven by external fields, driven chiral fluids, non-equilibrium shape dynamics of membranes, mechanisms of molecular motors converting electro-chemical to mechanical energy
ultimately leading to motion, morphological and topological transformations such as those occurring in assemblies of actin or microtubules driven by molecular motors, and pattern formation in chemical and biophysical systems. Other topics of interest also include molecular aspects of far from equilibrium problems related to formation of glasses, competitions between vitrification and crystallization, etc. The workshop can help bring together researchers working on these diverse areas and identify common microscopic physical principles, and how individual molecular processes lead to collective properties.

The recently (re)started Soft-Matter Gordon Research Conference (held every other year) explores some of the above mentioned themes and has been very successful in recruiting broad and diverse set of researchers. Proposed and recently organized KITP meetings on these topics have also generated broad excitement in the scientific community. We anticipate that a meeting hosted in Telluride will similarly be successful.

Notes:

IMPORTANT: Participants should be aware that this workshop runs Tuesday through Saturday. Discounted lodging rates begin on Monday, June 19th. If you are planning to arrive on Sunday, you can stay at the Hampton Inn (970-547-4120) next to the airport and come up to Telluride first thing on Monday. You will receive a discount at the Hampton Inn by saying you are a TSRC scientist.

We wish to ensure an intimate workshop setting, with no more than 20 to 25 participants. If you are interested in attending, but have not received an invitation, please contact the workshop organizer before registering.

Telluride Science is about expanding the frontiers of science, exploring new ideas, and building collaborations. The workshop schedule will allow for substantial unstructured time for participants to talk and think. All participants are expected to stay for the entire duration of the workshop. Scientists are encouraged to consider bringing family or friends. Telluride offers a number of options for children's camps (including Telluride Academy, Aha School for the Arts, and Pinhead Institute). There is more information on childcare, camps, and family activities on Telluride Science's website. Feel free to contact Telluride Science's staff to help with any planning and/or coordinating care.
