Pinhead Punk Science
A New Program for Kids
By the Climbing Rock in front of the Conference Center
Free admission. Free Diggity hot dogs, chips, and drinks for kids.
In close collaboration, Pinhead Institute and the Telluride Science Research Center (TSRC) are bringing a new program, Pinhead Punk Science, to the region. Held weekly, on Tuesday evenings from 5:00 to 6:00 pm throughout the summer, scientists will meet informally with children by the climbing rock in front of the Conference Center to demonstrate cool stuff in a scientific way. Admission is free.
The idea for the program was first conceived by Dr. R. Stephen Berry, a James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago and co-founder of the TSRC. Having broken off from the Aspen Center for Physics to start TSRC in 1984, Berry kept tabs on the Center. Berry was particularly impressed with their educational outreach program, “Physics For Kids,” conducted in partnership with a local Aspen science education non-profit, and held during the summer months in a fun way. But it wasn’t until TSRC hired Nana Naisbitt as their first executive director in January 2007 that the program could be realized. Turning kids on to science and imparting an intuitive understanding the scientific method is a goal of the program.
The 2007 & 2008 Pinhead Punk Science series is sponsored in part by a grant from Just for Kids and is supported by the Telluride Conference Center in Mountain Village.
