Paul Barbara Scholarship

PAUL BARBARA, 1953 - 2010

In memory of Dr. Paul Barbara, a TSRC fellowship has been established to assist graduate students who wish to participate in a TSRC workshop. Dr. Barbara held the R. J. V. Johnson-Welch Regents Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and was director of the Center for Nano- and Molecular Science and Technology at the University of Texas at Austin. He was a member the National Academy of Sciences and a TSRC scientist. PaDr. Paul Barbaraul was a dear friend and esteemed colleague to many at TSRC, and he is deeply missed. This fellowship has been generously funded through the efforts of Greg Voth, Professor of Chemistry, University of Chicago.

Two scholarships will be awarded annually in the amount of $1,000 each. This money can be used to defray the cost of transportation to Telluride, l
odging, food, and other incidentals. For each scholarship awarded, TSRC will fund the cost of registration, worth $275. Preference will be given to students who are in at least their third year of graduate studies; preference will also be given to students who apply by March 31 of a given year for the coming summer program. A TSRC board committee will review all applications and will make the determination as to who receives the awards.

Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship should send an email to the TSRC director, Nana  Naisbitt, including information on which workshop he or she would like to attend, a statement addressing how attending the workshop will be of value to them, and a copy of their CV. They should also have their PhD or postdoctoral research advisor email a letter of recommendation. Finally, since participation in TSRC meetings is by invitation, applicants must check in advance with the organizers of the workshop they wish to attend to get the organizers’ approval. TSRC will encourage organizers to provide an opportunity for fellowship recipients to give an oral presentation at the workshop.
