TSRC Philosophy
"The open nature of discussions at TSRC workshops often leads to the sort of critical discussion of ideas that is increasingly hard to come by. My experience with TSRC workshops is that the discussion is of a supportive nature, critical but constructive, and typically driven by curiosity and a desire to understand the questions at hand. Part of that grows from the expectation that workshop participants present new ideas that they, themselves, are working to better understand, rather than talks that 'advertise' their latest published, and therefore 'finished,' work."
John Straub, Former TSRC President and Chair of Board
Tips on Keeping the TSRC Philosophy in your Meeting Schedule
- Allow plenty of time for discussion and activities; please plan on a maximum of twenty five 50-minute presentation/discussion slots. We suggest scheduling presentations for 35 minutes with 15 minutes of discussion. Better yet, encourage people to interrupt so the entire 50 minutes is dialogue.
- You may want to consider replacing one or more standard 50 minute slots with two 25 minute slots for postdocs and students. In addition, it is possible to schedule a 2-3 hour session for posters, which you could use to have students, postdocs, or others not giving an oral presentation a chance to present.
- Remember it frequently rains in the afternoons in Telluride, so you should leave at least one morning free for group hikes.
- Schedule frequent coffee breaks
- There are only a few rules: 1) The earliest breakfast can be served is 7:00 a.m.; 2) If there is a Town Talk the week of you meeting, Tuesday evenings must be left open between 6:00 p.m.-7:15 p.m. to allow folks to attend. The talks are held at the Palm Theatre, down the hall from the meetings. Scheduling a group meal after the talk is a good idea; 3) You must leave Thursday evening free for the TSRC picnic from 6:00pm til dark; and 4) Your meeting must adjoun by noon on Friday so the staff can prepare for the next week.
- Other than that, you are free to schedule your meeting as you please.
